Rob Insoll of Black Door Building was referred to us by some good friends who had recently engaged Rob & his team to renovate their Victorian terrace in Carlton & they were so pleased with the outcome, they introduced Rob to my wife Bev & I at the infancy of the rebuild of our home in Fitzroy. From our first meeting with Rob & seeing his work first hand we knew we were on the right path because we realised Rob is not just a great builder, he is extremely passionate about his craft & ensuring that his clients get the best outcome.

Working with Rob over the 12 months of the project was easy, seamless & all times we felt we were in good hands, he not only understands building but also design so was able to advise & guide us when changes or additions needed to be made, all of the suggestions he made & we embraced ensured we ended up with an even better outcome than we had originally hoped to achieve.

Apart from the excellent team, Rob engaged over the journey, he had to work closely with both our Interior designer, pool company & Landscape team. The collaboration here was excellent, once again ensuring, we the client, got the right outcome as Rob’s Project Management skills are first class.

Our whole experience was one of always feeling we were in the right hands, we couldn’t have made a better decision appointing Rob & in fact he was the only builder we interviewed & considered appropriate for what we wanted.

Rob brought our dream to reality! An incredibly reliable professional with a fantastic team who were always on time, friendly, knowledgeable and neat in their work. It was a challenging extension design to a circa 1910 Victorian home with many prior extensions and renovations. We were faced with many issues including council problems, tight access and design concerns that Rob and the team negotiated superbly.

After a long and difficult planning process, we started the build on time and finished early thanks to incredible management and workmanship.

Rob regularly offered cost saving alternatives and recommendations to improve the project to achieve the best outcome for the build.

We first met Rob in 2017, after we had designed & documented our renovation and extension project for our townhouse in Kensington. He was the first builder I spoke to who seemed as interested in the specific details & design aspirations as I was. Once the project commenced on site, Rob and his team worked diligently to keep the project to schedule, taking on additional scope items, unforeseen changes and delays during construction in their stride. Our project was a total renovators delight – a complete mess. We went to the team at Black Door with plans and a budget. Rob was able to plan the build to our budget, with many of his ideas resulting in cost saving, without compromising quality.

The house looks amazing on completion – the attention to detail of the team meant that many original features were saved, restored or recreated. The project ran to time and budget and the finished product was beyond expectations.
